Milon Debnath, born on April 6, 1954, in Coomilla district of Bangladesh spent his childhood and early years in Agartala, Tripura. His early education in music were from his father, Late Sri DuniChand Debnath and his elder brother Late Sri Vidhu Bhushan Debnath. Having completed his Visharad from Agartala in 1975, he came to Lucknow in 1979 for advanced training in Indian Classical Music from Bhatkhande Music Institute , Lucknow . He was awarded Sangeet Nipun degree from the same institute in 1981. . He took his formal training from renowned Indian Classical vocalists, Ustad Niyaz Ahmed and Faiyaz Ahmed Khan of Kirana Gharana in Bombay in the year 1980.
During the course of training in Bhatkhande Music Academy, he felt certain inadequacies in the existing teaching methodology and this inspired the creation of the book “Sangeet Milon” Part I and II. This text book of music covers the syllabus till Nipun degree. It is based on “Guru Shishya Parampara” principle. In 1999 he brought out Sangeet Milon Part III which is a critical analysis of Bhatkhande’s collection of Kramik Pustak Maalika Part I to VI.
Inspired by the ethics of “Guru Shishya Parampara” a music school was established in C–1036/37, Mahanagar,Lucknow and to assist in its development an organization “Sanskriti” was founded in the year 1990. In the year 2000 , he brought out Sangeet Sankalan in 3 volumes which is a compilation of selected bandishes from the 6 volumes of Kramik Pustak Maalika authored by Pt. Vishnu Narain Bhatkhande, and bandishes from the works of Pt. SN Ratanjankar, Pt. Dinkar Kaikini & Pt. GN Natu. In these three volumes sections on each raga is complete with songs, ‘swar vistaras’, and ‘taan’ which give a complete picture of the raga and are greatly helpful to teachers and students initiated into the world of music.
He presently resides in C-1036/37 Mahanagar, Lucknow.
